When it comes to private equity, governments nationwide and their retirees may not actually be getting what they pay for. That at least is the conclusion of a new study by Michael Weisbach, the Ralph W. Kurtz Chair in Finance at Fisher, and his colleagues.

Leaders at midsize companies -- those with $10 million to $1 billion in revenue -- overwhelmingly say tariffs pose a threat to their business, according to a recent survey by the National Center for the Middle Market at The Ohio State University. Hence, a strategically timed rush to lock in prices before the higher tariffs kick in. 

Terry Esper, associate professor of logistics at Fisher, talks about central Ohio's location as being essential as more retail shifts online: "As we see more and more companies getting products out and to consumers and shipping directly to homes, we're seeing the strategic locations of those [distribution centers] as a very vital part of sucess in this new economy."

Brian Mittendorf, the Fisher Designated Professorship in Accounting, who studies the NRA’s financial statements, said the group does not appear to be facing an immediate fiscal crisis. But he said multiple years of declining net assets raise concerns: The organization will need to scale down its spending or find new sources of revenue.

“For firms with high passive ownership, you have lower reaction to company-specific news,” said Itzhak Ben-David, the Neil Klatskin Chair in Finance and Real Estate at Fisher who’s studied the topic. “When everybody pulls money out of the market or gets into the market, the tide lifts all boats.”

The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business established the Specialized Master of Business degree program in Business Analytics (SMB-A) to help professionals develop a mix of business and analytics expertise to study data and produce actionable insights.

As technology reshapes the work of the supply chain manager, so-called “soft skills”, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal effectiveness and empathy, are increasingly important, says Keely Croxton, associate professor of logistics at Fisher.

Typically, according to Robert Smith, an author of the study from The Ohio State University, as people get used to eating something, they enjoy the food less as time goes on. 

Private foundations have two advantages — donors can use a foundation to “make a big splash publicly” and rally people around their cause, while also locking in “immediate tax deductibility,” said Brian Mittendorf, chair of the accounting department at Fisher and the Fisher Designated Professorship in Accounting.

“As shoppers we are often in a hurry, so much so that we might not even be aware of how quickly we make a decision. That’s where clear labeling can help,” said Rebecca Walker Reczek, professor of marketing at Ohio State University. “Without it you’d need to research each product and the time can add up.”

That price point and several other factors should make the new prescription eyewear a huge success, said Deborah Mitchell, a professor of marketing at Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business.

“Our food chain, our supply chain our just-in-time manufacturing approach doesn’t lead us to allow a lot of room for error,” said Phil Renaud, executive director at the Risk Institute. “So, if you don’t have the resilience approach to business then you will lose most likely market share. [Customers] will go elsewhere and it won’t take very long for that to happen.”

Ohio State and City of Columbus help launch Mod Squad, new handyman service. Mod Squad is a product of the C-Biz program. Launched in 2016, C-Biz is a partnership between Columbus City Council and Ohio State and Fisher designed to connect established, small and minority-owned businesses with students who can provide consulting and analytical services.

The idea for the innovation center grew out of a conversation with Ohio State's Paul Reeder. Before the center, Ortiz and Redd would often post up at Mission Coffee Co. in Short North to work. When Reeder saw the duo’s coffee cups during a meeting, he said the ecosystem needed a place like Mission – where people felt comfortable sharing their ideas and collaborating.

Rebuilding Together was one of the two small and minority-owned establishments that took part in a city-funded Ohio State University pilot for a program called C-Biz. Students at the school's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship did a marketing study.

“This is a continuation of long-term trends for the NRA,” said Brian Mittendorf, chair of the accounting department and the Fisher Designated Professorship in Accounting. “Revenues are down across the board, and the expenses aren’t down enough to cover it.”

Roy Hall, a former Ohio State wide receiver, who earned a Fisher College of Business degree in marketing and even had a few years of NFL experience to his credit, could have availed himself of the many opportunities that await a former Buckeye, but that kind of success didn’t interest him.
